Norman Rockwell, September 17, 2010

The Day After:

Tom began with some childhood photos and stories, continued through Rockwell's younger days, the places that he lived, and some of his paintings. Then he settled in on the Norman Rockwell style that is reflected in so many Saturday Evening Post covers. Many of them we had seen before, but Tom was able to point so many unique things about the painting that would be impossible to spot without help. For instance, a painting of a group of average working-class people included a not-so-young woman holding a child who clung to her. The woman, Tom told us, was Norman Rockwell's wife and she was holding her granddaughter. His wife had actually died two months before the child was born and Rockwell had brought them together in the way that he knew best.

We had a great crowd for this excellent program, 177 by actual count.
